Basarab flyover costs rise as more works are added

The Bucharest City Hall Council has approved a EUR 108 million increase in the costs of the Basarab flyover, Mediafax has reported. The sum covers the expenses incurred by the project over the past two years. The financing will come from the local budget of the city hall.

The last assessment of the project was made in 2007 but as construction works have evolved the need for additional constructions has emerged.

According to representatives of the transport division of the Bucharest City Hall, the additional works involved changes made to the initial project draft to build a cable-structure bridge. The changes were due to inconsistencies between plans and site developments, delays in expropriations, changes made to the subway station at the Basarab bridge and the construction of a moving sidewalk inside the railroad station.

The two-kilometer long flyover, a EUR 180 million investment, is expected to decrease traffic around the North Railway Station area and connect Grozavesti and Nicolae Titulescu boulevards. The flyover includes two major crossing points – the Dambovita River over the existing bridge, and the railroad in the Gara de Nord area.
